When college players don’t contribute at all in two years, it sometimes means it’s just not going to work out. It doesn’t mean the players can’t play and it doesn’t mean that something bad happened. It just means that change is needed. That seems to be the case with two of Michigan’s most intriguing sophomores, Amorion Walker and
Clemons Darrius. Because of their physical attributes, Walker and Clemons were considered members of the 2022 recruiting class, therefore expectations were very high for them both, but they were never fulfilled on Ann Arbor.
Walker started out as a wide receiver but eventually switched to cornerback, and it was widely believed that he and Will Johnson would be the team to shut down the field for many more seasons. Walker, on the other hand, battled ailments and saw only mop-up work. The 6-3, 180-pound Walker only had one reception for four yards and one pass breakup in his two years at Michigan. He was extraordinarily long and quite quick for his height, but he was unable to capture crucial moments.
It’s a similar story for Clemons. Once Ronnie Bell played out his eligibility in 2022, there were wide receiver snaps available for someone to step up and take in 2023. A lot of people thought it would be Clemons after laying eyes on the 6-3, 212-pounder and seeing him make some plays in the spring game. He looked like he was created in a lab and built to play wide receiver but he could never find meaningful snaps either. He finished his Michigan
career with just four catches for 40 yards.
Both of them are as physically endowed as football players come, so it will be intriguing to watch where they finish up and how they grow further. About a year ago, Walker—a native of Louisiana—recorded the quickest three-cone drill speed in NFL Draft Combine history, clocking in at 6.10 seconds during winter training. If you were “drafting” a roster, Clemons would almost always be selected first overall. The Oregonian received over 35 offers as a high school prospect and visited Auburn, Oregon, Penn State, USC, and Michigan on official visits.
