Another loss for Kaizer Chiefs as top target signs new contract

Kaizer Chiefs have lost out on Riaan Hanamub after the left-back signed a new contract with AmaZulu this week.

It appears as if Kaizer Chiefs have missed out on another target after Riaan Hanamub penned a new contract with AmaZulu.

Amakhosi have been looking to sign the 29-year-old Namibia international after failing to capture Stellenbosch star player Fawaaz Basadien. Chiefs are currently looking to strengthen their defence, especially in the left-back position.

KAIZER CHIEFS TARGET EXTEND CONTRACT WITH USUTHU

Usuthu announced last week that they were willing to sell Hanamub to Chiefs but but for a good price. According to GOAL, Amakhosi offered AmaZulu R3 million for the Namibian star but the KZN outfit turned the offer, demanding at least R10 million.

On Thursday, AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu confirmed that the Kaizer Chiefs target signed a new contract.

“Yes, he has signed a new contract with us, which is for a further three years,” Zungu told SABC Sport.

“We never received an offer in writing. This contract (for Hanamub) was something already in the pipeline.”

With Hanamub having penned a new deal, Kaizer Chiefs will now have to look elsewhere. Zungu has made it clear that the club will not stand in the way of any player who wants to leave.

“We are not a team that stands in the way of players, if he comes to us and says he wants to leave, we let him go,” Zungu said on Isolezwe. Before signing a new contract, Hanamub declared his desire to stay with Usuthu despite Kaizer Chiefs rumours.

Kaizer Chiefs: Five biggest flops the club signed in the past decade

Kaizer Chiefs have in the past made some very questionable signings especially in the striking department.

Kaizer Chiefs have made big signings over the past seven years but some of the players were PSL’s greatest flops.

With Stuart Baxter leaving Amakhosi in 2015, the team was dysfunctional which forced the club to rebuild under a new coach Steve Komphela. Over the next nine years, the club changed coaches regularly but success eluded them.

Samir Nurkovic remains the club’s best signing in close to a decade. The Serbian striker scored 13 league goals in his first season with Amakhosi but that was not enough to help his side win the league.

WHO ARE THE BIGGEST FLOPS KAIZER CHIEFS HAVE HAD IN YEARS?

Gustavo Paez

The 34-year-old Venezuelan striker joined Chiefs in 2017 but failed to live up to expectations. Having played for Spanish side Mallorca, many expected the South American striker to fire, but he only netted seven goals in 47 appearances. He was eventually released in 2019 and replaced with Nurkovic.

Bhongolwethu Jayiya

Jayiya was one of the biggest flops of the 2017/18 season and never really fitted for Kaizer Chiefs. The winger was lethal at Bidvest Wits and Ajax Cape Town but failed spectacularly at Chiefs.

Edmore Chirambadare

Chirambadare was signed from Chicken Inn but did nothing for two years before he was released.

Lazarous Kambole

Having scored 39 goals in 56 matches for Zambian giants Zesco United, Amakhosi thought they found another Collins Mbesuma. Kambole turned out to be another flop for Kaizer Chiefs, scoring only two times in his three-year stay at the club.

Jasond Gonzalez

The tall Colombian striker joined Chiefs on loan from Real Santa Cruz. Molefi Ntseki looked up to him to help Amakhosi with their goal-scoring woes but the striker found the going tough.

Kaizer Chiefs have signed yet another South American this season. Having left Mamelodi Sundowns, Gaston Sirino joined Amakhosi on a free transfer.
