Michigan Wolverines news: A key transfer portal departure, plus staff shakeup
Michigan football suffered its first big loss to the transfer portal, plus more on the coaching staff in our Michigan Wolverines news roundup.
Prior to Friday morning, Michigan football had not lost any significant players to the transfer portal. However, that changed when former top-100 safety Keon Sabb declared that he would be leaving the Michigan Wolverines in order to use the portal.
This past season, Sabb recorded 28 tackles and two interceptions for the Michigan football team. In the national championship game, he additionally had a crucial pass breakup.
Although Sabb wasn’t officially a starter for the Michigan Wolverines at safety, he was expected to play a more significant part this season and may have played a lot of snaps in a huge nickel role. I was hoping to see that, but Sabb is going to pursue other opportunities with his talents.
This emphasizes even further how Michigan football has to bolster its secondary by adding some quality through the transfer portal. Rod Moore and Makari Paige are back, so safety isn’t an urgent necessity, but the Wolverines still need a No. 2 corner and someone who can play in the slot.
Michigan Wolverines suffer a coaching staff shakeup
On Wednesday, a story surfaced stating that Steve Clinkscale would be replaced as secondary coach for Michigan football by Stephen Adegoke, the coach of the Houston Texas safeties.
Sam Webb of the Michigan Insider reports that Adegoke will remain in the NFL rather than play for the Michigan Wolverines due to the tremendous encouragement he received from Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans.
It’s a blow for Michigan football because Adegoke is a rising star. He was also on the Michigan Wolverines coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 2021, so it would have been a popular move among the players in the secondary.
But done is done, I suppose. The defensive coordinator for Louisiana, Lamar Morgan, interviewed for the position as well. I still think he would be a fantastic fit for the Wolverines, as I stated earlier this week. He was a play-caller at Vanderbilt and worked for Jesse Minter.
Sherrone Moore could not have made a mistake in my opinion. The revelation that Adegoke will remain in the NFL raises questions about whether Sabb’s exit had anything to do with Adegoke’s connections to the players, which may have been the decisive factor.
Still, I think it’s a smart move if Morgan is hired by Michigan football.
