2 killed in crash with wrong-way driver fleeing Michigan State Police, freeway closed over 11 hours
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (FOX 2) – The Lodge Freeway near Lahser Road has reopened after a crash investigation closed it for over 11 hours. Two people were killed after a wrong-way driver fleeing Michigan State Police crashed early Saturday morning.
Around 1:30 a.m., MSP South Post troopers on patrol found a 2006 Ford Super Duty truck that was reported stolen in the back of a gas station on Eight Mile Road.
According to MSP, the suspect driver of the vehicle fled the parking lot on 8 Mile close to the Southfield Freeway after backing up and nearly hitting the patrol car. According to MSP, the suspect left the area as troopers attempted to pull the truck over.
The suspect proceeded north on Telegraph Road as the pursuit carried on northward onto the Lodge. According to the MSP, the suspect turned off the truck’s headlights and performed a U-turn while traveling south in the northbound lanes.
With its headlights off, the truck drove south and re-entered the Lodge’s northbound lanes, according to MSP. Near Civic Center Drive, the truck collided head-on with a 2011 GMC Terrain.
A 45-year-old Farmington Hills man and a 43-year-old woman who were both passengers in the GMC Terrain were pronounced deceased on the spot. MSP said that their family has been informed.
Both the suspect vehicle’s driver, a 35-year-old Romulus resident, and its passenger, a 29-year-old Detroit resident, are listed in critical condition at the hospital. According to MSP, both are anticipated to live.
