“He’s been incredible,” Jamie Carragher remarks, expressing his amazement at the £17 million Tottenham player this year.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has named Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario in his Premier League Team of the Season so far.

Spurs have had a very good first half of the campaign, haven’t they? They are currently fifth in the table, just six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool. Vicario has arguably been their best player.

Jamie Carragher hails Tottenham star Guglielmo Vicario

For a mere £17 million in the summer, Tottenham acquired Guglielmo Vicario from Serie A team Empoli (Daily Mail).

The Italian was relatively unknown five months ago, but in that time he has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers.

Vicario has already come through for Tottenham numerous times this season. He has had incredible shot stopping ability and has also played effectively against the Spurs high line.

Even if Jamie Carragher is sure that Vicario is superior to the Brazilian in his Team of the Season selection from last night, he still believes that Liverpool’s Alisson Becker is the best goalkeeper in the world.

He said about Vicario on Sky Sports: “I just think because he’s new to the Premier League – I think Alisson is the best goalkeeper in the world – but in terms of being new to the Premier League, his xG prevention is the most in the league as well.

“I think he’s been brilliant with the high line, coming off his line and helping Spurs with that as well. For a new keeper to come into the Premier League and perform as well as he has done, that’s why he is in.”

Vicario has been Tottenham’s best player

Huge praise was bestowed upon James Maddison and Micky van de Ven for their stellar start to the season, while Heung-min Son has also been outstanding. But Guglielmo Vicario, in our opinion, has been Tottenham’s greatest performer thus far this season.

The Italian has been playing really well, as evidenced by Spurs’ predicted goals versus statistics. Despite only giving up 29 goals this season, Tottenham has an xGA of 40.82 (Understat).

Vicario has thus far prevented 11 goals for his team, which is a major factor in why Tottenham are currently so close to the top.

Spurs would be in real trouble now if Vicario hadn’t done what he has managed to do so far. If he continues this form, he will likely lead Tottenham back into the Champions League.
