Son Heung-min makes Harry Kane claim as he discusses Tottenham’s attack in his Asian Cup absence
Tottenham’s attackers will need to step up to the plate over the next month with Son Heung-min potentially absent for over a month as South Korea compete in the Asian Cup
Son Heung-min’s top priority during the Asian Cup is for his fellow Tottenham attackers to score goals while he is away. The 31-year-old, who scored in Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Bournemouth, has left to join South Korea, who hopes to advance far in the tournament in Qatar.
Son is undoubtedly going to miss the forthcoming FA Cup match against Burnley, Manchester United in the Premier League, as well as perhaps an FA Cup fourth round match. If his team advances to the final, which is scheduled for Saturday, February 10, Son might miss three more Tottenham games. Consequently, that will enable Richarlison,
The chance to step up and try to score goals as the squad attempts to have the ideal start to 2024, like Son used to do when Harry Kane wasn’t playing, is given to Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson.
Son believes that Richarlison, Kulusevski, and Johnson are “hungry for more goals” in the upcoming weeks, as the Brazilian has found his form after undergoing surgery and scored five goals in his past five games.
“I really hope so. The Tottenham captain remarked, “I hope above all that they are my family and my teammates.” “I’m hoping for as many goals as they can manage.
“I feel like when Harry [Kane] was here and he was missing some games with injuries, I felt like I needed to step up in previous years. I hope our players feel this kind of feeling that they need to step up for this kind of situation. In this situation you grow as a player and a human being.
“Richy is doing a fantastic job, I hope he is hungry for more goals, also Deki and Brennan. I hope everybody who is playing attacking positions can score as many goals as possible and bring us to a better position. I wish it more than anything else.”
Spurs are in a strong position to attack in the new year after finishing 2023 on a high note by taking all three points against Bournemouth, who are doing well. The fact that Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is in fifth place and just one point out of a Champions League berth after a year of change due to the hiring of Ange Postecoglou and several significant squad additions and departures highlights the tremendous progress the team has made in a short amount of time.
“There has been a lot of change, 100 per cent, but everybody is taking a big responsibility,” said Son. “In light of the past few years, this is a significant accomplishment.”
“Those lads are working really hard, we are not talking about where we are now or how many points we have. That is a good sign. We are just focused game by game, just want to win every single game.
“We also have made some mistakes and you learn that you can’t win 38 games in the Premier League because it
is really difficult. Pay attention to ourselves instead of the table and wait to observe what occurs.”
Given how tight it is at the top of the table after 20 games, is Tottenham still in the running for the Premier League title?
“Everybody is very close in the title race but we don’t really want to talk about it because there are still 20 games to play and we’re still missing many important players,” said Son.
“We’re going to concentrate on ourselves and give it our all in each game. We attempt to avoid thinking about other teams, approach the game with the goal of improving both our football skills and our mindset, and then we’ll see what transpires at the end of the season.”
