This weekend promises to be exciting as always for the Michigan football team. Michigan is adding a few elite recruits in an attempt to build momentum ahead of the April 20th Spring Game. A very recent addition to the roster, 5-star 2026 running back Savin Hiter is the biggest name.
Regarded as the top running back prospect in the country for the class of 2026, this Virginia native is a highly skilled player gaining widespread recognition. But early on, Michigan football has captured his attention and is one of his top picks. Pulling five-star running backs out of Virginia is nothing new for Tony Alford; he accomplished this with TreVeon Henderson a few years ago.
Some other schools in the early running include Ohio State and Georgia, which means that this is going to be a hard fought battle for Hiter’s services. In this case, however, Hiter being a 2026 recruit could work in Michigan’s favor. Over time, I expect that NIL will become either more regulated, or Michigan will significantly increase their NIL. Like basketball, once the lack of NIL affects the success of the team, administration should realize its importance.
Getting Hiter on campus this early will allow Michigan football to build the foundation with him, and build momentum. Sherrone Moore will get a chance to prove himself as a head coach, and the running game will have yet another chance to be elite for Michigan.
Yes, it will be very difficult to win over Hiter. There are a lot of unknowns, namely how Sherrone Moore will perform as the head coach, and how Michigan’s recruiting/NIL will progress under coach Moore. Hiter, like most running backs, adores the way Michigan’s offense runs. Now that they have Tony Alford as their coach, the Wolverines are a serious contender for a few top backs.
Michigan will have considerably more momentum to acquire Hiter in 2026 if they can sign a top back in 2025. These days, it’s very difficult to anticipate whether Michigan would sign a five star, especially in light of their recent setbacks, but you have to imagine that a running back would definitely fit the bill.
