Eastern Michigan University apologized on Sunday after one of its players started a large-scale fight after the team’s Saturday night 59-10 loss to South Alabama in the 68 Ventures Bowl.
A massive brawl broke out on the field when defensive back Korey Hernandez leapt across the field and sucker punched an unwary Jamarrien Burt in the back of the head while the players from South Alabama were standing and singing the school’s alma song.
Eastern Michigan’s athletic director, Scott Wetherbee, released a statement on Sunday denouncing Hernandez’s behavior.
What started the fight and Hernandez’s behavior is not entirely understood.
Hernandez has played for Eastern Michigan for the last four seasons, but he hasn’t had much of an effect lately—he has only recorded nine total tackles in the last two seasons. With Eastern Michigan, he just had one interception, and it was during the 2019 campaign.
South Alabama had a dominant 627-150 advantage in total yards in addition to winning the 68 Ventures Bowl handily on the scoreboard.
Following their loss on Saturday, Eastern Michigan has a 6-7 record at the end of the season. As for South Alabama, they concluded with a 7-6 record.

Ethan Utley wants to select a school before midsummer, when he will make his formal visits, according to insider reports. Although it seems like southern colleges, particularly his home state of Tennessee, have a significant advantage for the time being, I believe Michigan football might make a big impact by winning a national championship this season.
Ethan Utley is a four-star prospect according to the On3 Recruiting Rankings, which place him as the 43rd recruit nationwide, the nation’s seventh defensive lineman, and the top player in the state of Tennessee.
Michigan is still in the running for this top-ranked SEC target, even though their football recruitment may not be in the lead at the moment.
