The Michigan Wolverines are all-in on five-star high school quarterback recruit Bryce Underwood, who is reportedly looking at NIL packages in the neighborhood of $5 million.

Underwood, a Michigan native, is the top recruit in the nation according to 247Sports and has been committed to LSU for the better part of a year.

But the home-state Wolverines are turning up the heat. So much so that Michigan appears to have run off four-star quarterback Carter Smith, who had been committed since Nov. 14, 2023.

“I would like to start by thanking the coaching staff at Michigan for everything they have done for me,” Smith said in a message on social media. “I would especially like to thank Coach Campbell for everything and giving me such an incredible opportunity. With that being said, I would like to announce that I have decommitted from the University of Michigan.”

247Sports lists Smith as the 14th-best QB in the country in its composite rankings and the 158th-ranked player overall.

“Scrappy, dual-threat quarterback prospect that finds ways to win games,” Andrew Ivins wrote in his scouting report. “Enters senior season with 36 career starts under his belt and plenty of accolades. A bit unorthodox as a passer with his lower release point and off-platform launch points, but has proven to be a rather effective distributor on the move. Can generate plenty of whip with his torso and attack the sticks, but must improve the ball placement when operating inside the pocket as he tends to miss low or wide.”

Michigan and first-year coach Sherrone Moore are clearly going all-out for Underwood. They would have done so whether or not Smith remained committed.

But now, with Smith out of the picture, the Wolverines are in a position where they’re absolutely desperate to land Underwood’s signature.
