’No surprise’: Alan Shearer blasts £165k-a-week Tottenham star who has been ‘really poor for a long time’

Back to square one for Tottenham Hotspur. 

If Ange Postecoglou ever wanted to know what Tottenham was all about, well, he got his answer loud and clear against Newcastle United on Saturday.

Spurs went into that match sitting fourth in the Premier League table, with a game in hand, and in with a chance of moving clear of fifth-placed Aston Villa.

On paper, going to St James’ Park is pretty difficult, and it wasn’t so long ago that they were finishing in the Champions League places themselves.

But a lot has changed for Newcastle since then, including Eddie Howe being forced to play a depleted team due to injuries, starting at right back with Jacob Murphy.

Even so, Tottenham lost 4-0, and not a single player on the other team was able to carry themselves with dignity.

While most people focused on the defensive mistakes made by Timo Werner during the game, Alan Shearer was rather harsh of him.

The former Chelsea player is currently on loan at the team from RB Leipzig, but his performance in front of goal was forgettable.

In an interview with Premier League Productions on April 13, 24 at 1:25 pm, the all-time leading goalscorer in Premier League history called Werner’s finishing in front of goal “really poor,” although he was also quick to note that it has been “for a long time” already.

“He has a long time to look at that, it has come in from a long way to adjust your body to head it or volley it,” said Shearer about Werner’s volley ballooning over the bar at 0-0.

“Yet, when the ball comes in, he isn’t ready at all. That’s the two chances he had. He had to hit the target at least. That’s no surprise because his finishing is really poor and it has been for a long time.”

Werner’s future will need to be decided sooner rather than later, and you believe you have the solution.

Many supporters would undoubtedly decide against signing the £165k-per-week player.

Spurs supporters are aware of Daniel Levy’s methods. There won’t be much left over for another attacker if he puts money on the table for the German.

You may also contend that Spurs will require an all-out striker come summer transfer window.

Even though they have scored plenty of goals this season without Harry Kane, they still haven’t replaced him.
