Scott Brown says Celtic have proven that the gap between Rangers is still ‘quite big’ after winning the opening two Glasgow derbies of the season.
To round off a pretty successful 2023, which saw the Bhoys win the Treble under Ange Postecoglou, the team topped it off by beating Rangers 2-1 at Parkhead.
Given Celtic’s slip-ups in December, there was a lot of pressure on Brendan Rodgers heading into that game.
But when it meant most, the team did what they had done all season long: they stood up, showed their character, and demonstrated their worth.
According to Scott Brown, who talked with Sky Sports, the “difference” between the Rangers and Celtics is the “quality” of the team.
It should be mentioned that important players, notably another improvised center-back combination, have been absent for the second consecutive Glasgow Derby.
But in terms of goal scoring ability, Rangers were only able to generate a single goal from James Tavernier’s free kicks in those two games.
In any case, Scott Brown sent a harsh warning to Rangers on their chances of catching Celtic this season.
Celtic and Rangers gap
“But Celtic have a strong squad and, as you saw when they played the other week, the gap was quite big, the way the Celtic front three pressed, the quality they have got, I think that’s the difference,” said Brown.
“You have to win and put on a show when you play in important games at home, and Celtic accomplished just that. They performed incredibly well, in my opinion, especially in the opening 75–80 minutes. They controlled the game, played aggressively, and appeared to be the only team capable of scoring.
“They have placed themselves in a fantastic situation, and they will only get stronger and more physically fit.
Celtics are often extremely strong from the beginning of the season to the finish. I’ll be interested to watch how they move forward in the directions Brendan desires.
Quiet January transfer window
