Watch: Brutal field conditions revealed at Allegiant Stadium ahead of Super Bowl LVIII
Super Bowl LVIII is around a month away, and the NFL may have a problem.
At least in the end zones, Allegiant Stadium’s field conditions are harsh, as Scotty Gange of 9News Denver uncovered before of the Las Vegas Raiders’ season finale versus the Denver Broncos.
The multi-purpose stadium, which cost $1.9 billion, opened in 2020 and has two retractable fields. UNLV also plays home games there and prefers to play on artificial turf, while the Raiders play on grass, which receives sunlight and includes an irrigation and drainage system. Fitted with all the necessary features to keep the field immaculate, it only furthers the mystery surrounding how parts of the field look as Feb. 10 quickly approaches.
The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs both complained about slick conditions during Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, just a year ago, so the league should be particularly concerned. Although the field’s overwatering was ultimately to fault, Allegiant Stadium and State Farm Stadium both have retractable natural grass fields, thus this year’s game may experience the same problems.
The NFL needs to be extremely vigilant to make sure everything is in prime condition for the game or games this time around, given the issues that are already evident at the Raiders’ stadium and their previous past.
