Celtic and Rangers both want to sign £3m Scotland international
Glasgow Rangers have reportedly joined Celtic in the race to sign Scott McKenna as the Ibrox side and the Parkhead outfit vie for the Scotland international’s signature.
Rangers presently trails Celtic by eight points in the Scottish Premiership standings, but the Ibrox team still has two games remaining against Brendan Rodgers’ team.
Now, Rangers and Celtic will compete off the field to try to recruit the Nottingham Forest defender, according to talkSPORT writer Alex Crook.
“Told Celtic FC and Rangers FC are both interested in NFFC defender Scott McKenna,” the reporter said on X.
Glasgow Rangers and Celtic would both benefit with Scott McKenna in their ranks
With a fairly close Premiership title race currently in progress, both Rangers and Celtic will want to bolster their ranks in pursuit of glory this season.
They would also be getting a top-tier player with elite experience for a possible steal in McKenna.
In September 2020, the 27-year-old made a £3 million deal from Aberdeen to Forest, and he has since made 105 appearances overall for Forest.
Forest has been in the English top division since 2022 thanks to McKenna’s efforts in helping the team earn promotion to the Premier League.
The center back, though, has lost favor at Forest and hasn’t featured for the Reds since mid-September after suffering a major injury in the second part of the previous campaign.
McKenna’s contract expires at the end of the season, and according to Aberdeen Live, he has been informed he can leave the team.
He can now freely discuss signing a pre-contract with clubs outside of England.
It might be entertaining to watch this transfer drama unfold. McKenna has a clear track record in the Scottish Premier League and has excelled both domestically and internationally.
If Rangers and Celtic are able to lure him to Parkhead or Ibrox in the upcoming weeks, they will be stronger.
We’ll see in the coming weeks what transpires. This appears to be a lead for a transfer with some legs.
