Perenara hasn’t given up, though. The Rugby World Cup winner has re-signed with the Hurricanes and New Zealand Rugby for a two-year contract, and he wants to wear black again.

Perenara said to reporters last week, “We play this game, in New Zealand, because you want to be an All Black.”

“You want to play for the team you’ve always loved and at the best level possible.

Yes, it drives me in a significant way. But I’ve always been motivated in part by that.

It’s the best we can do in this game. We’re either in the wrong position or acting inappropriately if we’re not motivated or enthusiastic about joining that team.

Growing rugby star Cam Roigard filled Perenara’s shoes with the Hurricanes while he was away, and the young player went on to make his All Blacks debut.

“You have to play good rugby, be on the field, and contribute to your team in order to be an All Black. Winning is also a big boost.

“Those standards and those goals will include all those components.”
