Spurs could repeat Udogie masterclass in swoop for “serious” £21m dynamo

The club have been linked with a possible January swoop for the versatile defender.

When the January transfer market reopens at the beginning of next month, Tottenham Hotspur may try to use it to bolster their roster.

Ange Postecoglou might expand his team’s possibilities by entering the transfer market and bringing in one or two new players to give them a boost before the second half of the season.

Spurs are reportedly among the teams interested in acquiring versatile Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso when the new season begins, according to a recent Calcio Mercato article.

The youthful defender is not someone the Italian powerhouses want to let go of. The publication did, however, assert that they might need to pay up to €25 million (£21 million) in order to be persuaded to cash in.

Postecoglou might replicate the team’s Destiny Udogie masterclass if Tottenham moves forward with a bid for the Italian gem. It is now unclear whether or not they will pursue the acquisition.

Udogie’s season in numbers

The attack-minded left-back was acquired by Spurs from Udinese last year for a reported sum of £15 million. His season-opening displays have already drawn attention.

In 15 Premier League games under Postecoglou, the 21-year-old sensation has contributed one goal, two assists, and two “big chances” generated.

Among his positional counterparts, he ranks in the top 19% and top 23%, respectively, with averages of 2.63 and 4.82 progressive carries and passes per 90.

The explosive full-back from Tottenham, who has also managed four tackles and interceptions combined per game, is a ball-carrying and passing specialist who enjoys taking the game to the opposition.

Spurs might potentially make another foray into the Serie A for Cambiaso, a quality young player, and land another fantastic attacking option at full-back.

The statistics that show why Spurs should sign Cambiaso

The 23-year-old wizard, who can play right back, left back, or as a winger on either side, might give the head coach depth in a variety of positions.

He played as a right wing-back for Juventus against Genoa on Friday night, and because of his versatility, Postecoglou may utilize him in either full-back position.

Similar to Udogie, the Spurs target has made 15 league appearances for his team this season, tallying two assists and one goal.

Cambiaso is among the top 12% of Serie A full-backs with progressive carries (3.51) per 90 and the top 16% for non-penalty xG and xAG (Expected Goals and Expected Assisted Goals) combined per 90. Milan great Mauro Tassotti praised Cambiaso for his “serious” and “humble” demeanor.

These numbers suggest that, when it comes to what he can do with the ball at his feet, the Juventus player may make an effect in England comparable to that of Udogie. He has the ability to contribute with goal involvements at the conclusion of his runs and can advance the ball through carries.

But Cambiaso needs to work on this one area in order to become a complete full-back like the current Spurs star. He’s only made 1.2 tackles and interceptions per game.
