‘Ridiculous’… Jose Mourinho now claims something crazy happened to him at Tottenham

Jose Mourinho has slammed Tottenham Hotspur over the decision to sack him days before the League Cup final back in April 2021.

The former Tottenham boss has been speaking on The Obi One podcast and reflected on his time in North London.

It’s fair to say that Jose Mourinho’s tenure at Spurs was underwhelming as he failed to replicate the previous success he’d enjoyed in England.

Tottenham moved to bring in the Portuguese boss after sacking fan-favourite Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019.

Despite a decent start to his first full season in charge in the 2020-21 campaign, things quickly unravelled after Spurs were knocked off top spot before Christmas.

Mourinho’s men crashed out of the Europa League with a 3-0 defeat to Dynamo Zagreb after leading the tie 2-0.

Mourinho did, however, succeed in leading Spurs to the League Cup final that year. However, he was not given the chance to lead them out at Wembley.

Less than a week before the match against Manchester City, Daniel Levy finally decided to fire the former Chelsea manager.Ryan Mason assumed leadership for the day and witnessed Spurs’ 1-0 loss to City at Wembley.

Mourinho has now taken another go at Tottenham for not winning any trophies, calling the choice “ridiculous.”

Mourinho labels Tottenham sacking ‘ridiculous’

Mourinho reflected on his short spell at Tottenham and didn’t hold back with his assessments of the decision to dismiss him days before a final.

“The most ridiculous one was a club that has an empty trophy room sacks me two days before a final,” he said. “That was the one that was, come on.

“Tottenham have never won, won 50 years ago, I don’t remember when. I am two days before a final and I couldn’t do the final. It’s the one which doesn’t smell well.

“I had a plan, but it doesn’t always work out. But the truth is, I’ve won every time I’ve gone to Wembley with Chelsea. I made three trips there with Man United and came out on top twice.

So, it was a solid record. It had a stadium and atmosphere that I was really good at controlling because you can’t attend to these big matches and feel like the stadium is too enormous; you have to feel comfortable.

“I would be a fool right now to say we would have won because the final was against Man City, but I had the experience to try and help the team.” However, we had defeated them 2-0 at our stadium a few weeks prior, so things were going well.

Tottenham were going through a difficult run of form at the time and Mourinho had seemingly lost support in the dressing room.

Nevertheless, it was a huge shock to see the club sack a cup final specialist days before facing City at Wembley.

That season, Spurs had defeated City at home, winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Giovani Lo Celso and Heung-Min Son.

But, a few weeks before to Mourinho’s dismissal, they had lost to Pep Guardiola’s team humiliatingly, 3-0, at the Etihad.

Many Tottenham supporters weren’t particularly sad to see Mourinho go, even if it’s still unclear why Spurs denied him the opportunity to win the championship.

That season, the Portuguese manager had played some rather boring football, and Spurs were losing games with leads all the time.
