Lionel Messi believes Tottenham have a young Luis Suarez in their ranks

Tottenham have a ‘young Luis Suarez’ in Alejo Veliz as per Lionel Messi

Alejo Veliz, a striker for Tottenham, moved from Rosario Central to the N17 in the summer with high hopes for the future. The 20-year-old Argentine has not yet shown up for La Albiceleste despite having trained with the national squad on several occasions.

But according to one Lionel Messi—possibly the greatest Ballon d’Or winner ever—Tottenham has struck gold with the purchase of Veliz, who the former Barcelona captain describes as a “young Luis Suarez.”

This season, Veliz has made six Premier League appearances for Ange Postecoglou. In those six outings, he has only played 17 minutes of total time. Given the busy time of year in January and the FA Cup matches, opportunities for a much more regular part will undoubtedly present themselves.

Messi thinks there will be a successor in place for him when he retires and is optimistic about the future of Argentine football. He likened Veliz’s style of play to that Luis Suarez, the former star player for Barcelona and Liverpool. He said the following to the Express:

Although comparing a young player like Velis to the greatest striker of this generation is undoubtedly premature, Tottenham supporters should be proud of their young guy, who is receiving respect from other young players like Messi, who also has a lot of potential.

Although drawing direct comparisons between Veliz and Suarez may be premature, there is unmistakable enthusiasm surrounding the young striker. It must surely fill Tottenham supporters with pleasure that Messi recognizes and values a player within their ranks for his talents.

Veliz still has a long way to go before he can compete on Suarez’s level. Hopefully, though, he accomplishes that sooner than we think and, in contrast to the Uruguayan, plays all of his prime football in the Premier League.

In the long run Alejo Veliz can take Harry Kane’s place at Spurs.

Alejo Veliz reminds Lionel Messi a bit of a teenage Luis Suarez.

With Messi’s support, Veliz’s career with Spurs continues, and there’s even more reason to be excited about what lies ahead for this young player from North London.
