Italian journalist Rudy Galetti has reported on Tribal Football that the ‘chances’ of Tottenham duo Gio Lo Celso and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg leaving for Spain are ‘growing’ – and it could facilitate a bid of their own.

Hojbjerg has dropped down the Spurs hierarchy this year as Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have a strong midfield partnership. Oliver Skipp is still employed by the club. The Dane might walk away.

According to Galetti, the ex-Bayern Munich and Southampton player is ‘always interested’ in joining Atletico Madrid, and a January transfer is anticipated. A loan return to Spain for Lo Celso appears highly plausible.

According to the writer, Spurs eliminating them from consideration and bringing in some cash for their services will make it easier to sign Conor Gallagher from Chelsea. Despite a £40 million bid, he is still a goal.

On the final day of the transfer window, The Mail reported that Spurs had made a £40 million offer for Gallagher, who played regularly for Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino. But because the Blues demanded £45m, a transfer did not take place.

Galetti: Chances of Lo Celso and Hojbjerg leaving are growing

Lo Celso has to get moving. With Ange Postecoglou in charge, there may have been some fleeting hope that he could launch his career at Tottenham, but James Maddison’s form has quickly dispelled that.

Hojbjerg lacks the dynamism Postecoglou’s side needs in the park’s center. Skipp does, but Bissouma and Sarr have excelled. Hojbjerg might fit in well if he moved to Spain or Italy.

It would be fantastic business for Spurs if they could secure some money for both midfielders and use it to sign Gallagher in January. Chelsea will, though, undoubtedly want to preserve their England star.

“They considered whether they could intervene to stop the game but they recognised that the laws of the game, set by FIFA and the IFAB, doesn’t allow that,” he said.

“There’s obviously a process in place that sits in the laws of the game about how we use VAR to make sure it is delivered consistently throughout every league in the world. And it doesn’t allow you to go back in those circumstances. As such they decided not to intervene.”
