Micky van de Ven must be loving life right now, as he carried his Tottenham Hotspur form into the international break with the Netherlands, and made a positive impact on his senior debut for his country.
It’s safe to assume that Tottenham’s defense was their primary problem during the previous season. Only five clubs allowed more goals than the Lilywhites in the league last season, and three of those teams were relegated from the Premier League.
Ange Postecoglou placed a high priority on solving that issue this summer. His remedy was the rumoured £43 million (Sky Sports) acquisition of Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg.
The 22-year-old has thrived at Spurs and formed a wonderful relationship with Cristian Romero at the center of the Tottenham defense, despite a rather difficult debut against Brentford.
Van de Ven came into the international break having scored his first goal for Spurs – a neat finish to win the game against Luton Town, thanks to some fine work by James Maddison.
Given his current form, an international debut was inevitable, and van de Ven was able to play ten minutes for the Netherlands in their most recent loss to France. Even though his team didn’t win the match, the young man conducted himself admirably on the big stage.
So much so that Marciano Vink, a former midfielder for the Netherlands, said the following following the game (via Voetbalpraat): “It’s good to see how many young guys are coming through. Van de Ven arrived and performed incredibly well. Gosh!”
I expected Micky van de Ven to be a success for this Spurs team even though I knew he would.
adapt to everything so quickly. He and Romero have the potential to be one of, if not the best centre-back pairing in the Premier League if they keep it up.
