‘Unbelievable season’ – Paul Merson discusses Tottenham’s PL title hopes
With Tottenham Hotspur at the top of the Premier League table as things stand, Paul Merson has been assessing their credentials for a title challenge, and insists the North London club should focus on securing a place in the top four.
Under the leadership of new manager Ange Postecoglou, things could not be going much better for Spurs. The Lilywhites have finished their first eight league games with six victories and two draws, placing them atop the Premier League as we approach the international break.
The club rapidly adopted Ange-ball, and their displays delighted Spurs supporters while also producing favorable results. With players like Heung-min Son and Yves Bissouma performing at their peak, it appears the Australian is getting the most out of his team.
James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario, and Micky van de Ven, who were all signed this summer, are also thriving in their new environments.
Should Spurs settle for a top-four spot?
Although Spurs are currently mentioned as potential title candidates, it is unclear how long they will be able to stay in the fight. According to Paul Merson of Sky Sports, the Lilywhites won’t be in first place at the conclusion of the year.
“It was a funny game,” Merson said of the victory over Luton. Given how many opportunities they wasted, I was sitting there in the first 15 minutes thinking, “If Harry Kane was playing now, the game would have been over.”
“After that, aside from the goal, Spurs didn’t appear to be scoring. But you have to give them credit for persevering after being reduced to 10 guys and achieving success.
“I know Luton are right down at the bottom, but it’s still hard. Spurs gave away a few chances, but in the end I thought they dug in and showed a new side to Tottenham.”
Merson continued, “Fair play to them, they are top of the league at the moment – will they stay there? “, when asked where Spurs will finish this season. That is not the point, but it is true.
“It would be an unbelievable season for Tottenham if they were to qualify for the Champions League next year.”
However, I honestly don’t see us contending for the championship this year. It’s great to dream, and perhaps we can remain in the running for as long as possible. I would be ecstatic with a top-four finish since that would be better than what I anticipated for us at the start of the campaign.
