Tottenham Hotspur

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Premier League flop Vincent Janssen will take on Barcelona in the Champions League tonight with Blaugrana boss Xavi Hernandez a big fan of the towering Dutchman.

With his blockbuster European debut for his new Bayern Munich employers just 24 hours away, Harry Kane has received a lot of attention this week. However, another, less well-known former Tottenham Hotspur forward will also be hoping to make his mark on the biggest of stages.

Vincent Janssen, who cost £17 million and is unquestionably one of Tottenham’s worst investments in terms of value, is in the midst of his greatest season since his time with AZ Alkmaar as he travels to Camp Nou.

Tottenham flop Vincent Janssen shining at Royal Antwerp

Janssen took up where he left off last season, scoring 21 goals to lead Royal Antwerp to their first Jupiler League title since 1957. This season, he has six goals in his first eight games.

It makes sense why Xavi named Janssen as one of Antwerp’s main “dangermen” given that the Belgian visitors hope to shock the crowd at one of the most recognizable football stadiums on the continent.

According to Xavi, Janssen is a highly dangerous striker for Voetbal Primeur.

“At Antwerp, there is a fair balance of youth and experience. Their team is excellent. They won the Belgian championship for the same reason.

An ‘amazing’ turnaround

Janssen, who scored two goals in 31 Premier League games between 2016 and 2019, left Tottenham for barely £6 million. In fact, the Dutchman hit just about everything but the goal during his time playing for Tottenham, and you could have devoted an entire chapter to him in one of those vintage “Own Goals and Gaffes” gift stuffer DVDs.

The legendary Ally McCoist exclaimed, “(Janssen’s revival) is amazing,” to ITV Sport when the 29-year-old was selected for the Dutch team for the 2022 World Cup.

“Quite simply, he wasn’t very good at Spurs, was he? He struggled at Spurs.

Yes, poor at Spurs, but incredibly productive in Antwerp.
