Report says Barcelona passing up on chance to sign Spurs star was among their worst mistakes
The latest Mundo Deportivo column suggests that Barcelona’s decision to not sign Cristian Romero back in 2021 was one of the worst that the club’s hierarchy has made over recent years.
Romero struggled under Antonio Conte last season, along with other prominent Tottenham players, and the center-back received a lot of flak for it.
The 25-year-old, though, has had a wonderful start to the new campaign and has played much more like the man we saw during his rookie campaign at the North London side.
After being named the club’s vice-captain by Ange Postecoglou, the center back appears to be developing with the increased leadership responsibilities.
Romero carried his form to the international stage, starting for Argentina in their two victories over Ecuador and Bolivia. South American media sites claim that Romero, a Tottenham player, is now among the greatest in the world at his position (TyC Sports).

Following the center-back’s transfer to Spurs in 2021, Mundo Deportivo has now reported that Lionel Messi suggested the former Juventus player to Barcelona.
According to the publication, Messi’s father told Catalan club president Joan Laporta that Romero was needed by the league’s powerhouse teams.
Although the outlet claims that those were the worst moves the team has ever made, it is highlighted that Laporta not only disregarded that advice but also allowed Messi to join Paris Saint-Germain.
Romero is just one of the many great signings that Paratici made while he was the club’s manager.
Given the caliber of top talent he has brought to Hotspur Way, there is no doubt that the Italian would have played a major role in Ange’s success this season or in the years to follow.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Bale was all gushing over Spurs’ new manager.
After a standout Premier League season, the Welshman left North London in 2013 to join Real Madrid.
In the summer of 2020, Bale returned to Spurs on a season-long loan after winning five Champions League titles with Real Madrid.
Despite a few moments of brilliance, the winger’s comeback to Tottenham under Jose Mourinho didn’t quite work out, and in 2021 he returned to Madrid.
But Bale has been quizzed on whether he would have liked to work with Tottenham’s new man in the dugout, Ange Postecoglou.

Bale was questioned by Jamie Weir of Sky Sports about Postecoglou.
How much would a peak Gareth Bale enjoy playing for Big Ange, he questioned? Spurs supporters just want to watch thrilling football because they are playing it again.
Bale answered, “Definitely, yeah. It’s wonderful to see. They’ve got their old style back, something the club was presumably also seeking for given how he played and performed for Celtic.
Great beginning. Hopefully, the team will have more to share.
“They’ll obviously just keep getting better and better with a new manager, new style, and hopefully they can put themselves up there and give themselves a chance.”
Postecoglou has won three of his first four Premier League matches since taking over as Tottenham’s head coach, and he has had a great season thus far.
It’s fair to conclude that the Australian manager has already changed the way Spurs play, making them more appealing to the eye.
If we could have seen Bale in his prime play under an attack-minded coach like Postecoglou, that would have been some link-up.
Of course, the 34-year-old retired earlier this year after a short spell in the MLS, so a second return to Spurs is completely out of the question.
