A World Cup-winning Springbok has cast his verdict on the best flyhalf he has played with, interestingly picking a player from England
Strong center Andre Esterhuizen, who plays for both the Harlequins and the Springboks, originally gained notoriety in the late 2010s as a vital member of the Sharks.
However, Esterhuizen made the decision to take his skills overseas in 2020 and signed with the Harlequins of the English Premiership.
After a difficult beginning, Esterhuizen’s decision to start in the high-scoring final against the Exeter Chiefs in 2021 proved to be a wise career move as he was instrumental in helping the Harlequins win their first Premiership title.
When he was chosen as the Rugby Players’ Association Player of the Year in 2022 by his fellow Premiership players, his individual genius was once again acknowledged.
The burly midfielder’s form overseas has also seen him remain closely involved with the Springboks, which included a key role during the 2023 World Cup campaign.
Interestingly, in an interview with Planet Rugby, he was asked to name the best flyhalf he has played with, opting to notably pick Quins teammate and England star Marcus Smith.
You’re going to assume that I’ll mention Manie [Libbok] or Handre [Pollard].
“But in terms of work ethics, I think Marcus is the best fly-half I’ve ever played with because he’s a student of the game and an amazing player who can create something out of nothing.
Marcus is a cool-headed person, even though maybe not many people notice that. Even though he is among the greatest in the world, he is one of those men that is constantly looking to improve.
He is unquestionably the best fly-half player I have ever played with in terms of what has worked for me. I’m much better at playing beside and with him.
ESTERHUIZEN, WHO HAS EARNED 16 SPRINGBOK CAPS, HAS PLAYED EXTENSIVELY WITH SMITH AT HARLEQUINS
Born in the Philippines, but representing England due to his heritage, Marcus Smith started his professional career at Harlequins at an incredibly young age, becoming the second-youngest Premiership debutant ever at just 18.
Recognised immediately for his star potential, he made his official England debut in 2021 and quickly garnered attention for his attacking flair and impressive kicking skills. Smith even secured a spot on the prestigious British & Irish Lions squad that same year.
While 2023 saw him featuring in the Rugby World Cup for England, it was often in an unfamiliar position – fullback. Despite the switch, Smith’s adaptability helped England reach the World Cup semi-finals.
ESTERHUIZEN SOON HEADING BACK TO SOUTH AFRICA
It’s been a season of mixed fortunes for the Sharks, but there could be better times ahead after confirmation that they have made a few big signings, including that of Esterhuizen.
“I’m very grateful to Harlequins for providing me with the opportunity to return home to South Africa and be closer to my family,” the 29-year-old said.
“It’s been a difficult decision but I’m very thankful to the club for working through the process with me.
“I have loved my time at Quins, the club has played a huge role in my development and career achievements, and I have forged incredible memories and great teammates.
“I want to thank the fans for their fantastic support, playing in front of The Stoop every week is very special and I look forward to my final few months at the club. Once a Quin, always a Quin!”
