With the addition of veteran kicker Mason Crosby to the practice squad and the placement of Cade York on practice squad-injured reserve due to a quad injury sustained on Thursday, the New York Giants’ wacky, unexpected placekicker train took yet another wild turn on Friday.
York joins Randy Bullock and Graham Gano as the kickers the Giants have placed on injured reserve this season. York, a 2022 Cleveland Browns fourth-round selection, was scheduled to kick off against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday. After sustaining a hamstring injury Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, Bullock was placed on injured reserve on Thursday.
From 2007 until 2022, 39-year-old Crosby kicked for the Green Bay Packers. A few weeks prior, Bullock had worked out with the Giants, who decided to put him to their practice squad at that time.
Throughout his career, Crosby has made 395 of 485 field goals, or 81.4% of them.
Before Gano’s knee injury at placekicker started this sequence of events, special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey stated the following in October:
“I always tell people that once you board the kicker train, you have no idea where you’re going. Therefore, you prefer to ride on a steady train when you know exactly where you’re going and you know where the destination is. However, you may be anywhere when you receive one; you think you know, but you actually don’t know until you find out. Before you discover another one, you might have to travel halfway across the globe if you look up. There’s danger on that kicker train. You can go anyplace with it.
The Giants have undoubtedly experienced a crazy journey over the last two weeks.
