“Something inexplicable” – Player is ‘more than happy’ to have signed for West Ham, knows there’s work ahead
Mexican midfielder Edson Alvarez has insisted he is delighted to have joined West Ham, despite talks with Borussia Dortmund this summer.
Speaking on the Mexican National Team’s YouTube account, the midfielder discussed the international setup and his hectic summer.
For the majority of it, it appeared as though he would join Borussia Dortmund. Throughout the transfer window, reports made it apparent that they were interested, and a deal was moving along.
After selling Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid, the German team later decided against making the move and turned their attention to other targets as they reorganized their midfield.
Alvarez was then left at Ajax, but not for long as West Ham moved fast to complete a €38 million purchase at the start of August.
They were also looking to rebuild their midfield after selling Declan Rice to Arsenal and spent big to sign Alvarez, alongside deals for James Ward-Prowse and Mohamed Kudus.
They’ve opted for the London Stadium, though, and Alvarez insists he is more than happy with how things have turned out.
“Yes, the transfer market is always quite busy for all of us, obviously we hear a lot of things,” he said.
“There was a small portion on the Dortmund side that was a really particular option, and in the end, it couldn’t be. However, there were many efforts made to make amends, including trips to Amsterdam to meet with my family.
“I’ve always believed that everything is great and good and that everything happens for a purpose. I am now overjoyed that I made the decision to join West Ham, a team that has taught me a lot in just one month.
“The truth is that joining the best league in the world is a mystery thing.
“When we closed it, I took a flight to Amsterdam before continuing on to London without any training, so you can only imagine the intensity of the first few days when I arrived.
“I had a very difficult time with rhythm at first, but as the training progressed, it went quite well for me and adapted to me fairly well. In any event, I am aware that I still have a lot to learn because the league pushes players both physically and psychologically to their limits.
