West Ham can be pleased with their overall business during the summer transfer window, having successfully replaced Declan Rice and strengthened in other areas.

However, while a new full-back was always high on David Moyes’ list of targets, none arrived at the London Stadium before the September 1 deadline.

It means the Hammers are very light on both sides of their defence, relying on Emerson Palmieri and Vladimir Coufal to stay fit.

Unfortunately for Moyes, it appears as though Coufal is now a major injury doubt for next weekend’s visit of Manchester City after sustaining an injury while away with the Czech Republic.

Coufal played the full 90 minutes for the Czech Republic during last Thursday’s (1 September) 1–1 draw with Albania, but manager Jaroslav Silhavy afterwards announced the defender wouldn’t take part in the friendly match against Hungary this coming Sunday (10 September).

That was proven correct as Coufal was left off the roster for the 1-1 tie at Puskas Arena.

The West Ham player is reportedly “slightly injured” by the Czech Republic FA, whatever that means.

Coufal may not play against the English and European champions given that the match against Man City is only five days away.

For Moyes, who has started the 31-year-old in each of United’s four games this season, that is bad news. In actuality, only four outfielders for the Irons [FBref] have played every minute.

If Moyes doesn’t bring in any backup, Ben Johnson and Thilo Kehrer are left as Coufal’s go-to replacements in case he is really sidelined for the City game and potentially longer.

A very stable starting lineup has helped West Ham have a solid start to the season, but when Premier League play returns the following weekend, Moyes may need to reconsider.
