Call it a coincidence, but Carnival has updated its “Have Fun, Be Safe” onboard conduct policy just weeks after a brawl at Galveston’s Terminal 25 landed two dozen passengers on the cruise line’s “Do Not Sail” list. The fight was a PR debacle, earning the attention of international media outlets and reinforcing the cruise line’s low-rent reputation in scores of videos and social-media comments.

Alex Roberson, a North Texas cruise enthusiast who styles himself on Instagram and TikTok as @alexthecruiser, posted a letter detailing the updated policy on his Facebook page earlier this week. The letter had been placed in guests’ cabins as of June 1, he wrote.

In a separate video, Roberson gave some context for the changes. “We all have complaints,” he said. “We all know what’s been going on with Carnival. They’re getting a bad reputation, and a lot of people are stopping going on their cruise line.”

According to the letter, guests younger than 17 must leave the ship’s public areas by 1 a.m. unless in the company of an adult. The letter also urged them to “refrain from running and making noise (including shouting/screaming) in hallways,” and required earphones when using personal devices such as laptops, tablets, and mobile phones.

Additionally, the letter prohibited the use of handheld fans in the ship’s nightclub and bringing drinks “on any indoor dance floor.” It also banned marijuana and any derivatives, including THC products, from the ship; and cautioned against the purchase or use of “any illegal substances ashore,” warning passengers they may not be allowed back on board.

Guests violating these policies, or whose conduct is otherwise disruptive to other passengers, “will be fined, disembarked at their own expense, and banned from sailing on Carnival in the future,” the letter said.

Since Roberson posted the letter, more than 6,000 users have weighed in with their opinions. Many supported the curfew and hallway rules; others took issue with the ban on handheld fans, claiming it would ruin the popular “Boots On the Ground” line dance. The weed restrictions did not go over well at all.

“This is why I don’t travel,” said one user. “If my weed isn’t invited I’m not either.

Roberson, however, gave the new policy an A.

“It’s kind of a big win for those of us that love Carnival but have been tired of seeing the negativity that is walking onto the cruise ships,” he said. “I hope everybody has a great day and Carnival, please enforce these rules.”

A recent Jubilee passenger’s experience, however, suggests the cruise line may still have some work to do. On Roberson’s Facebook post, she claimed other passengers’ behavior had forced her to call security three nights on the weeklong trip.

“Partying, unsupervised teens were next door banging into the walls, screaming profanities, drinking and doing drugs, and peeing off the balcony until 6 a.m.!,” she complained. “It was the worst cruise ever! We got off exhausted!”
