Phil Parkinson on Wrexham transfer plans

Wrexham now have just one game left to play in League One, travelling to face Lincoln City this weekend.

This could be a goodbye for some players, with the likes of Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer potentially in line to feature for Wrexham for the final time.

Wrexham signed eight players during last summer’s transfer window, and we would anticipate another influx of new signings this summer.

Phil Parkinson needs new faces to cope with the increased demands of the Championship, and we have already seen Wrexham being linked with Rangers’ Tom Lawrence.

Parkinson has now told the Daily Mail that Wrexham ‘always have our eye on players who are free transfers and are going to be available and will continue to do that.’

The Wrexham boss noted that wages in the Championship are ‘mind-blowing’, something he has found when trying to sign players in League One.

Parkinson added that Wrexham will keep the same mantra of ‘no superstars, no egos’, continuing to prioritise the team over individuals.

“I think it’s interesting because the jump in salaries is incredible – mind-blowing,” said Parkinson.

“Even coming up to [League One] level, the jump to get players of Championship quality is expensive but obviously with the next level, I don’t think people outside football quite realise.

“We’ve always tried to make sure the culture in the club is right and I think that’s key – no superstars, no egos in the dressing room – and we’ve got to try and get that balance right again.

“You always need extra quality when you go up a level to make sure the right people come into the building,” he added.

Phil Parkinson plays down Jamie Vardy and Kevin De Bruyne

Part and parcel of the Wrexham experience is being linked with big names out of nowhere.

Cristiano Ronaldo to Wrexham was even floated by former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen, which we really can’t see materialising.

Jamie Vardy’s name is constantly mentioned, whilst Humphrey Ker has joked about Kevin De Bruyne to Wrexham as the playmaker prepares to leave Manchester City.

The Daily Mail note that Parkinson played down any talk of signing Vardy or De Bruyne, stating that they haven’t even been discussed at Wrexham.

There is time for that situation to change, but Parkinson’s approach to team-building suggests big-name stars won’t be his priority as he prepares for the Championship.
