Ange Postecoglou insists Tottenham will lift a trophy this season despite a sluggish start in which Spurs have slumped to 13th on the table after their latest loss to north London rivals Arsenal, 1-0.

A header from a corner by Gabriel was the solitary goal scored in the fiery North London derby, positioning the Gunners to remain on track with ladder leaders Manchester City.

Spurs, once again, have been left lamenting missed chances while the Australian manager is under pressure to improve results.

Having only recorded one victory in four games, it is the club’s worst return in the opening games since the 2015-16 season, in which they finished third.

Postecoglou has an impressive track record of winning trophies in his second season at the helm of a club and remains confident his record can continue with Spurs.

The former Celtic boss snapped when asked about a pre-season interview where he discussed his track record, clarifying his earlier comments with Sky Sports.

“I’ll correct myself – I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year. Nothing’s changed,” he said.

“I’ve said it now. I don’t say things unless I believe them.”

After taking Tottenham to fifth place in the 2023/24 season, Postecoglou is convinced the club’s 16-year trophy drought will be shattered under his supervision.

In his second seasons with Brisbane Roar and South Melbourne in Australia, Postecoglou won titles. He then completed the same feat in Japan with Yokohama F Marinos and in Scotland with Celtic.

He also won the Asian Cup two years after taking over as head coach of the Socceroos.

The North London derby continued a similar narrative to that of Spurs’ contests against Leicester City (1-1) and Newcastle (1-2) in which they dominated general play but failed to capitalise on the scoreboard.

“It’s disappointing, obviously,” Postecoglou said.

“It’s a big game for us, for our supporters and obviously not winning and losing that game is disappointing and painful.

“It’s pretty similar to the other games this year.

“We’ve controlled games and created more opportunities than the opposition, but that’s meaningless unless you actually execute as well, and we’ve got to execute better… then we switched off for a set piece and you pay the price.

“I’ve always felt you get what you deserve in this game and obviously we need to do more to get what we want, but there’s no doubt in all four games that we’ve dominated in the way I want us to.”
