Spurs Star Discusses How ‘Special it is Being a Mentor with His Tottenham Teammate

Tottenham Hotspur now have two Swedish stars in their squad, and Dejan Kulusevski has been talking about how well he and Dejan Kulusevski have been getting along, and revealed how he is dealing with being a mentor for the youngster.

Kulusevski wants to achieve great things with Bergvall

Kulusevski has now been at Spurs for three-and-a-half years, so he knows the club well. Because of this, and their shared nationality, it figures that the 24-year-old has taken Bergvall under his wing.

Bergvall signed for Spurs in January, but had to wait until the summer to officially arrive in North London. He’s had a good start to his time with the Lilywhites, too, integrating himself into Ange Postecoglou‘s squad with ease.

Speaking to the club about his compatriot and their relationship, Kulusevski said: “We’ve created a special bond together because we knew each other from before. But when you’re with someone every day, you learn everything about them and we spend a lot of time together so it’s a great relationship that’s started.

“It was nice to share the pitch with him and I had this extra special feeling against Bayern Munich when he assisted me for a goal so it’s things like that. But it’s only the beginning because when you have a great friendship away from the pitch usually it shows on the pitch and I’m sure that together we will do great things for the Club and our country as well.”

Let him play

While Kulusevski is understandably looking out for his young teammate, he stresses that it is important not to stifle Bergvall, and instead let him play his natural way.

He added: “He’s still very young. I remember when I was his age and, when I see another youngster here, I feel like I can help him settle in and progress quicker because I’ve already done what he’s doing right now.

“I think for us around him, the best way to help him is to not give him too much information – just let him play football as he’s a very good player and that’s what I’m trying to do to help him. When people tell me to help him in different ways, I’m very protective of telling him too much because I just want him to have fun and enjoy it – I don’t want to put any unnecessary pressure on him because he’s very young.”

He’s absolutely right about not interfering too much with Bergvall’s game. Kulusevski can be a valuable mentor to the teenager, but Bergvall has such raw talent that we have to let it develop naturally and let him play with freedom.
