The 2024 Premier Soccer League winter transfer window is close to hitting gear five. The pressure remains on Kaizer Chiefs.
We’re almost three months into the transfer window. Kaizer Chiefs have signed four new players and a few more are expected. Here’s our weekly feature on the latest reports since last week.
NO NEW SIGNINGS THIS WEEK
Following the signing of Miguel Inacio from Angolan giants Petro de Launda last week, Kaizer Chiefs have not managed to get another deal over the line.
Instead, coach Nabi has told the media that Amakhosi are not looking at Percy Tau and Fiston Mayele.
“There are no negotiations with Percy Tau because I believe he still has one year left on his contract,” Nabi told OnTime Sports, as per FARPost.
“Kaizer Chiefs respects the FIFA rules. If ever there’s an opportunity to sign him, it will be through official channels. We respect Al Ahly, they are a great team,” Nabi said.
On Mayele, the Tunisian tactician said: “He’s like family to me; we worked well together [at Young Africans],” Nabi told OnTime Sports, as per FARPost.
“But he has a contract with Pyramids, and he’s not available.
“We respect that and have not engaged in any negotiations,” the Kaizer Chiefs mentor concluded.
ASANELE VELEBAYI
Then there is Asanele Velebayi. Speaking to the media after selling Ashley Cupido when he had previously said the shop is ‘closed,’ – Cape Town Spurs chairman Alexi Efstathiou has sent an idirect message to Kaizer Chiefs on Velebayi.
“To answer your question regarding that the ‘shop is closed’, it is. We have to continue to operate as a club and focus on the challenge before us and that is to compete on the field not off it,” Efstathiou told iDiski Times‘ Sinethemba Makonco.
“In the meantime, if someone knocks on the door, as Stellenbosch did, there will be someone to open.
“Last we looked outside, there was nobody standing there and knocking!” Efstathiou concluded.
KAIZER CHIEFS’ FIRST FIVE BETWAY PREMIERSHIP FIXTURES
Pre-season will eventually end for Amakhosi. With around two weeks to go, here’s a look at Kaizer Chiefs’ first five fixtures for the 2024/2025 Betway Premiership.
The Soweto giants will start the season on 14 September in Bloemfontein. It is where Marumo Gallants have decided to play their home games at the Toyota Stadium this season.
Match day two will see Amakhosi host a home game against Stellenbosch FC on 22 September. The third game will be a trip to Durban’s AmaZulu on 25 September, before the fearsome champions Mamelodi Sundowns visit the Glamour Boys at the FNB Stadium on 28 September.

The 30-year-old still has that desire to end his career in Europe but that itself looks very unlikely. Having played for Brighton and Hove Albion and Club Brugge, the Bafana Bafana star got a taste of playing in Europe. In fact, Tau played against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League in a thrilling 2-2 draw back in 2019.
At the age of 30, why would Percy Tau move back to the Premier Soccer League to join Kaizer Chiefs? The striker won everything that is to win in South Africa with Mamelodi Sundowns six years ago. He was part of the team that won the CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup.
Percy Tau to Kaizer Chiefs more of a pipe dream
He tasted more success with Club Brugge winning the Belgian Pro League. His time at Brighton was not memorable and he ultimately made a premature move to Al Ahly. Although he has won close to 10 trophies in Egypt, Percy Tau never found his rhythm or flair with the Red Devils.
Having passed his peak, the former Sundowns star will likely stay in North Africa or move to the Middle East. ‘The Lion of Judah’ is the type of player who wants to compete with the very best and win trophies. A move to Kaizer Chiefs will be a step back for Percy Tau given where the club is at the moment.
The Bafana star hasn’t played much this past season having fallen out with his coach Marcel Koller. His next destination is unknown but Al Ahly rivals Zamalek were reportedly interested in the forward.
