Rumoured Kaizer Chiefs target Percy Tau has sounded a loud ultimatum to Al AHly amid ongoing speculation about his future.
SERIAL WINNER PERCY TAU WANTS TO LEAVE EGYPT
After a glittering tenure with Egyptian giants Al Ahly, Bafana star Percy Tau wants his contract prematurely terminated which would involve a R20.6 million payout. Since joining Al Ahly in 2018, he’s won 10 major honours including two Caf Champions League crowns. 30-year-old Tau has 46 caps for South Africa to go with 15 goals.
CAN CHIEFS AFFORD TAU’S SALARY?
As things stand, Percy Tau reportedly pockets R23.2m annually, roughly R1.93m a month. The former Genk, Anderlecht and Brighton winger wants Ahly to buy him out of his lucrative contract.
SWITCHING THE NORTH FOR THE SOUTH, AND VICE VERSA
Not so long ago, it was unthought of that South African players would head to the North of Africa for club football. This season, Elias Mokwana has swapped Sekhukhune for Esperance in Tunisia, while Khanyisa Mayo moved from Cape Town City to CR Belouizdad in Algeria. Both of those players were rumoured to be Kaizer Chiefs targets.
HAS TAU’S SHIP SAILED?
Sure, he’s been collecting trophies like stamps with Al Ahly but Percy Tau has failed to deliver for South Africa on the grandest stages. Bafana made it to the Afcon semi-finals but Tau had a tournament to forget on a personal level. With all due respect, if Chiefs need a transformative player, he needs to be somebody rocking it for his country.

28-year-old Inacio Miguel arrives with club football experience in Portugal, Romania, Latvia and most recently Angola with Petro de Luanda. He has requested and received the number 83 jersey previously worn by four-time Betway Premiership winner Morgan Gould, who won two league titles with Amakhosi. Fiacre Ntwari, the 24-year-old Rwandan goalkeeper, is also highly-rated. He’s still only 22, but Rushwin Dortley is a massive prospect. He’s in the strange situation where he might make his full Bafana Bafana debut before pulling on a Chiefs jersey for the first time, with Afcon qualifiers on 06 and 10 September against Uganda and South Sudan. Bongani Sam and Gaston Sirino, meanwhile, boast vast experience of top-flight football in SA.

Meanwhile, journeyman left-back Bongani Sam will become only the fifth player in history to represent all of South Africa’s Soweto clubs when he pulls on a Chiefs jersey for the first time. Amazingly, he’s still only 26. Then there’s 33-year-old left-footer Gaston Sirino, a man who knows how to win with 11 trophies to his name at Sundowns, including seven league crowns on the bounce. He’s not a long-term fix but he’s a great guy to have around as the club negotiates a transition phase.
AMAKHOSI ARE ALSO LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
Fiacre Ntwari, the 24-year-old Rwandan goalkeeper, is highly rated and arrives from TS Galaxy to much fanfare. Bruce Bvuma, recently called up by Bafana Bafana, has a battle on his hands to retain the gloves. It’s been a problem position for a while at Chiefs but things are looking up. Having two full internationals between the sticks can only be a good thing, right?

BUSINESS ISN’T DONE YET
The transfer window closes on 20 September and the club are still expected to go all-out for a wide attacker, playmaker or striker. The new Betway Premiership season kicks off on 14 September with the Glamour Boys heading to promoted Marumo Gallants on Matchday 1.
