News: Tottenham hijack as England Int’l Summer exit drags

Tottenham will be monitoring Conor Gallagher’s move to Atletico Madrid as they eye a potential transfer hijack, according to Alan Hutton.

The Chelsea midfielder had appeared set to join the Spanish giants and end his spell at Stamford Bridge, but the deal has now been thrown into doubt with Gallagher reportedly now returning to London [BBC Sport, 14 August].

While the summer move could still happen if the transfer can be agreed, Ange Postecoglou’s side are also understood to be admirers of the England international having tracked him in several transfer windows [Football London, 17 July].

Although Spurs remain outsiders to secure the midfielder’s signature, Hutton believes Spurs chief Daniel Levy will be keeping tabs on developments with a view to a possible hijack in the coming weeks.

“It’s one they’ll probably be monitoring,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

I think he comes into that team and he probably does start because Yves Bissouma I wasn’t too sure about last season.

“In flashes, he did really well last season and we’ve seen that he is capable but can you have somebody in there who gives you a little bit more?

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has now left so there’s an option to bring someone in, so I’m pretty sure they’ll be monitoring it to see how it is going to play out over the next couple of weeks.

“By all accounts, Gallagher might not be in the plans moving forward at Chelsea so there might be a deal to be had and that’s something that Daniel Levy would like.”

Will Conor Gallagher exit Chelsea amid Tottenham transfer rumours?

On paper, Gallagher has the exact characteristics that would allow him to slot into Postecoglou’s team perfectly should Spurs manage to hijack Atletico’s move for his signature.

As Hutton suggests, if he isn’t a part of Enzo Maresca’s plans moving forward, Chelsea may be more willing to sell to a Premier League rival and therefore Levy may be more interested in a cut-price deal.

While the midfielder’s move to Madrid is on ice, the door is open for the Lilywhites to swoop in and secure his signature, but Spurs cannot afford to leave their move too late or they could risk missing out.

This could be one to watch closely ahead of the transfer deadline as things can change in an instant at this stage of the summer.
