Super Bowl Champion Drops Highlight Reel After Comparison to Broncos QB [Watch]
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton knows what he wants from the quarterbacks running his offense. Payton typically favors quarterbacks who can play in a rhythm and on time from the pocket, which describes rookie first-round pick Bo Nix.
Nix and former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees have been compared.
The Super Bowl champion responded appropriately after learning about the most recent version of that comparison, in which Michael Robinson of NFL Network asserted that Nix was a more athletic Brees.
“This one had to be enjoyable for me!”On May 22, Brees made a post on Instagram. “Thank you for the analogy, @real_mike_rob. In the NFL, Bo Nix will be amazing. But I still don’t see a lot of quarterbacks doing this.You have to be athletic! Don’t lie, tape!
A 13-time Pro Bowler, the league’s leading passer seven times, and a four-time touchdown leader in his 20-year Brees amassed 752 yards and 25 touchdowns on the run during his career. However, he only accumulated 366 yards in his first five years of playing with the San Diego Chargers.
Nevertheless, the Saints were responsible for 21 of his 25 touchdowns and both his and Payton’s only Super Bowl triumph. In addition, he finished his college career with 14 touchdowns and 906 yards.
But it was his passing skills that made Brees famous.
The Broncos undoubtedly have similar ideas about what they would like to happen to Nix. Although he is also more well-known for his passing prowess, the 24-year-old has demonstrated the capacity to move the pocket and buy his receivers extra time.
Joel Klatt: Bo Nix a ‘More Athletic Drew Brees’
Nix rushed for 1,613 yards in his collegiate career, including a career-best 510 yards in 2022 at Oregon. Like Brees, Nix scored most of his rushing touchdowns in his second act with the Ducks after transferring from Auburn where he gained most of his yards.
“He, I think in a lot of ways, reminds me of Drew Brees; although not as prolific of a passer and more athletic as a runner,” Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt told Denver Sports in January. “He is smart and makes those decisions as a point guard more so than a guy that’s gonna stand in there and really drive the ball down the field.”
The comparisons flattered Nix, who said he admired Brees as a child. He acknowledged his journey was just beginning.
He described the analogy as “extremely courteous.”
It’s like, really, please. How do we proceed? That’s… one of the greatest things ever,” Nix remarked on the April 3 podcast episode of “RG3 and The Ones.” “I’ll accept it. Yes, feel free to liken me to Drew Brees. I have a lot to do, study, and play for right now.
Regarding Nix’s move to the college game, Klatt expressed some hesitation, saying he wasn’t asked to perform in the same way as he would have under Payton at the lower level.
He is not the only one who feels that way. Nix, though, notices the parallels.
Bo Nix’s Transition to Broncos Going Smoothly
“When you watch old cut-ups and when you watch what they did with that system, it was quick game, get the ball out, timing stuff that I love to do,” Nix said. “That’s what we did so great here at Oregon, I believe.”
Payton said Nix was handling the installation of the Broncos’ offense well during rookie minicamp. He compared his young QB to a golfer for his consistency.
After the first OTAs, the head coach used a similar stance, highlighting Nix’s collegiate experience.
On May 23, Payton informed the media, “He’s farther along than most would be.” “The player in question has participated in 61 games during his time in college.” He is really intelligent. He’s picked it up really fast.
Unavoidably, there will be difficulties along the route. However, Nix has an untested or unimpressive field of rivals for the first position.
If post-draft projections are to be believed, he might be on pace to start in Week 1.
