The Sharks have been dealt a massive blow following confirmation that two of its most influential Springboks will miss Friday’s Challenge Cup final.
Two World Cup-winning Springboks, Lukhanyo Am and Jaden Hendrikse, have been ruled out of the Sharks’ Challenge Cup final against Gloucester in London on Friday.
SHARKS SUFFER SPRINGBOK SETBACK
There was mixed injury news out of the Sharks camp on Tuesday, with director of rugby Neil Powell confirming that Hendrikse and Am will play no part in their title encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Hendrikse is still recovering from an injury he suffered against Scarlets in Llanelli last month, while Am was one of three Springboks – Eben Etzebeth and Vincent Koch the others – that was forced off in the first half of their match two nights ago at King Park against Benetton.
Am will be absent for some while. Powell added, “I’m not sure how serious his injuries are. He has a cracked rib and is dealing with a shoulder issue. He’ll be absent for several weeks. For him, it is unquestionably the end of the URC and EPCR campaign.
“Losing both your captain and your national team members is never easy. This season, Lukhanyo has performed incredibly well for us. You want your senior players to be available for knockout matches. Thus, it is kind of a major loss for us.
GOOD NEWS AMID THE GLOOM
Better news for the Challenge Cup finalists: center Ethan Hooker recovered from his ankle injury sustained against Clermont in the Challenge Cup semi-final, and Koch and Etzebeth should be ready for the championship game.
“I believe we have competent substitutes. Powell remarked that Ethan Hooker did well to raise his hand and demonstrate his ability to play at this level.
On Friday night, at 9 p.m. (South African time), the Sharks and Gloucester will play in the Challenge Cup final.
