Ian Wright has called out West Ham United midfielder James Ward-Prowse for not getting tight enough to Phil Foden in the 3-1 loss against Manchester City.
Foden put City ahead with a goal in the first two minutes of play and added another in the eighteenth, securing an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League triumph.
However, Wright believes that in the lead-up to the champions’ early opener, Ward-Prowse responded “too late.”
He commented, “He was fantastic today, Phil Foden,” on the BBC’s Match of the Day [May 19]. He was really, extremely tough to pick up, but given his shape, I doubt you could have done so anyhow.
It’s too late for Ward-Prowse. The way he’s playing, it’s too late; you need to put more pressure on him than that because there isn’t much backbone to [his strike], and that [early goal] simply put an end to things.
West Ham United unable to affect the title race
Despite West Ham’s best efforts, they were unable to earn a result that would create some drama in the title race between City and Arsenal – Pep Guardiola’s men would have been at risk of losing the league on the final day had they dropped points – as well as send departing manager David Moyes off on a high note.
