Paul Merson has claimed he will get a Tottenham tattoo if they manage to beat Manchester City on Tuesday night, and hand Arsenal the advantage in the Premier League title race.
Pep Guardiola’s side head to Spurs knowing they need to win in order to put themselves in pole position ahead of the final round of league fixtures this weekend. City are currently a point behind Arsenal with an inferior goal difference, so need to win their game in hand in order to leapfrog the Gunners in the table.
The odds are certainly in the champions’ favour, and City have won their last seven league games, averaging four goals per match in that run. Meanwhile, Spurs are in dire form and, prior to Saturday’s win over Burnley, had lost four on the bounce.
Add in that a Tottenham win could tee up Arsenal to lift the Premier League trophy for the first time in 20 years, and Merson doesn’t have much faith that Ange Postecoglou’s side will do his former team a favour.
“I said after the Aston Villa game, when Arsenal got beat at home, I said it was all over then,” the ex-remarked the midfielder on Sky Sports. Nothing has caused me to reconsider. Man City simply does their thing.
“They’re working under pressure every week, which is depressing right now. Man City, I don’t think we treat them with enough respect. They are simply an incredible football team.
“It’s likely that Arsenal will place second. No, if your bet is on Tottenham to win or tie a football game. I will get a Tottenham tattoo if they win that. [I’ll place it] out of sight for you.”
