‘He hasn’t touched the ball’: Paul Merson says one Tottenham player has been so poor recently
Paul Merson has delivered his verdict on one Tottenham Hotspur player who has been struggling with form recently.
Spurs have dropped their last four Premier League games. They have been playing shockingly well, and they very certainly won’t make the top four.
For several months now, one player in particular hasn’t looked like himself. Now Merson has said his mind about him.
Paul Merson makes claim on James Maddison’s form since his return from injury
In the summer of 2023, Tottenham acquired James Maddison from Leicester City for a reported £40 million (BBC).
Many people thought the Englishman was a great addition to Spurs. He was perceived by many as the midfield gap in Tottenham’s lineup.
Madison had a great start to the season. In his first nine Premier League appearances, he racked up three goals and five assists, placing him close to the top of many people’s signing of the season lists.
But the 27-year-old missed more than two months of action due to an ankle injury he sustained in November.
Since then, Maddison has made 14 appearances for Tottenham in the Premier League, however he has only managed two assists and one goal.
His form has been really poor recently.
Paul Merson stated in his Sky Sports column regarding Tottenham and the Englishman: “He (Ange Postecoglou) has got to change next season.”
“Tottenham fans are already becoming agitated; their season is focused on preventing Arsenal from winning the league at this point. You can no longer live that way, and the players must take responsibility for their actions.
Madison has recovered from his injury and hasn’t made contact with the ball. It’s not just the management; you can’t just carry on as you are; he did sustain injuries.
“I enjoy him and their style of play, but as a fan, it’s not good.”
Ange Postecoglou needs to give James Maddison’s teammate a chance
Tottenham need to change something after losing four games in a row in the Premier League.
In the past two games, Ange Postecoglou has experimented with lineup changes, inserting Rodrigo Bentancur against Liverpool and starting Dejan Kulusevski at number ten against Chelsea.
We believe Postecoglou should give Giovani Lo Celso a chance right away when Tottenham plays Burnley at home since those modifications simply didn’t work.
The Argentine, who played only 11 and 15 minutes respectively, came off the bench to create three chances against Chelsea and Liverpool.
Given how much better he looks and how different Maddison appears from before, we believe Lo Celso should get started.
