Harry Kane ‘curse’ is showing a Mohamed Salah truth that should decide Liverpool fate

Harry Kane’s wait for a major honor looks as though it could continue despite his mover to Bayern Munich. He’d no doubt love to swap places with Mohamed Salah at Liverpool.

Even the most partisan of football fans must feel some sympathy for Harry Kane at the moment. It seems the former Tottenham striker simply cannot catch a break.

Throughout his career, the 30-year-old has received numerous individual accolades, but the major prizes have eluded him. However, one would think that after deciding to join Bayern Munich over Tottenham last summer, his trophy drought would be ending? After all, for the previous ten years, Bayern has all but guaranteed to win the Bundesliga.

But Kane’s luck seems to be such that he seems to have joined the club just as a new power is beginning to emerge. Under Xabi Alonso, Bayer Leverkusen has dominated the league, amassing an eight-point advantage and going undefeated.

Meanwhile, things are far from rosy in Bavaria. Bayern lost its third game in a row on Sunday, a situation that is usually unthinkable, and although it’s not out of the running for either the Bundesliga or Champions League, it currently seems a mile off claiming any silverware this season.

Kane must be wondering just what he’s done to upset the football gods. His move to Bayern made absolutely perfect sense, and yet he still finds himself the subject of ridicule on social media, even leading to some suggestions he might be ‘cursed’ as he faces up to yet another year without a winner’s medal in his cabinet.

Things wouldn’t have been any different of course had he stayed put at Spurs. And yet, the recurring debate when his future was up in the air was whether he should chase the trophies with Bayern, or achieve the individual honor of becoming the Premier League’s top scorer of all time. Whatever anyone tells you, he made the right call.

Kane is going to be remembered as one of the all-time great strikers. If he had stayed in the Premier League, he would have easily surpassed Alan Shearer and quickly became England’s top scorer by passing Wayne Rooney. He has maintained his form in Germany, where he can legitimately assert that he is on level with, if not superior to, his predecessor Robert Lewandowski.

But every player understands they need the trophies to go along with the goals in order to become immortal in football. Mohamed Salah, who is currently 59 goals behind Kane in the goalscoring rankings, is unlikely to pass the Englishman unless he stays with Liverpool and continues to play well, but the Egyptian will undoubtedly be far happier with his career overall.

The 31-year-old has won every major honor at Liverpool, and could be on course to add more this season. Whether he decides that’s enough and looks for pastures new at the end of his current deal remains to be seen, with just one more year on his contract after this current season, and Saudi Arabia no doubt set to come calling again.

But when players like Kane are struggling to even claim one major honor, why should a player like Salah turn refused the opportunity to expand his collection any further?Jürgen Klopp’s exit will undoubtedly prevent him from deciding on his future plans right now, but the Reds appear ready to continue where they left off with their new manager.

Salah may still have a lot of options at Anfield, and Kane has demonstrated the real motivation that propels elite athletes. Even with all of his ambitions, there can be no doubt now that Kane would trade careers with Salah in a heartbeat. Who knows, if the Egyptian sticks around long enough, he might even surpass the England captain’s record.
