‘He was horrendous’ – Rio Ferdinand admits he was wrong about one Tottenham star
Rio Ferdinand has been taken aback by how much Pedro Porro has improved compared to last season, with the Man Utd legend astonished by the confidence with which the Spaniard is now playing.
Since Porro, 23, hasn’t had a terrible game yet this season and is one of the select few players who have maintained their fitness, he is certainly in the running for Tottenham’s player of the year award.
The fact that the former Sporting Lisbon player had to learn how to play a new position because Ange Postecoglou wanted his full-backs to invert makes his performances even more impressive.
In his early months in the Premier League, the right-back did have some defensive lapses, but so far this season, he has played flawlessly, holding his own against some of the division’s most dangerous wingers in one-on-one scenarios.
Rio Ferdinand was not impressed with Pedro Porro at first
Ferdinand admitted that Porro looks a completely different player to last season and credited Postecolgou for the defender’s transformation.
The Man Utd legend told Vibe with Five: “Udogie and Porro, the way the manager has improved these two. Porro, I was canning him last year. How have they paid that money for him? He was horrendous last year.
“He is a new player, set up by a new management who joins the team. It’s not real. similar to a deal. Together, they are perhaps the Premier League’s two best fullbacks at the moment. Under pressed, Porro is spilling out all kinds of things.
To be fair to Porro, it makes sense that a young player entering the Premier League would require some time to get used to the tempo and rigors of the game. After being prematurely written off by some commentators during the previous season, he is now proving why Spurs spent £44 million for his services.
