Tottenham now want to sign 21-year-old English midfielder who’s ‘the talk of the town

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly set their sights on Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney.

Earlier this week, Spurs were named by The Independent as one of the clubs set to join the race for the 21-year-old.

In addition to Tottenham, Hackney is being considered by Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United.

According to trade guru Dean Jones, “it is true that Spurs have interest” in the highly-regarded Boro player.

Jones, however, attempted to downplay rumors that Tottenham is the front-runner to recruit Hackney in a post on GiveMeSport.

Additionally, he asserted that a July transfer was more likely to occur and that a January departure for the player was doubtful.

Following his goal against Chelsea, Hayden Hackney is the talk of the town, according to Jones. And it might not be too long until he’s putting himself to the test each week against clubs that caliber.

“Spurs are the side being talked about as the favourites to sign him, but that is not quite the case because Middlesbrough refuse to consider anyone as likely to sign him at this moment in time.

“There is an acceptance that he probably will make a move in the summer, and it is true that Spurs have interest.

“But this is a very early stage of that process, so there is scope for plenty of other teams to challenge for his signature.”

Tottenham have made quite a name for themselves in recent years with regards to signing top prospects and turning them into established first-teamers, such as Pape Matar Sarr and Destiny Udogie.

And Hackney is certainly a top prospect. For a 21-year-old Championship player to be linked with some of England’s biggest clubs is testament to his outstanding ability and potential.

The defensive midfielder helped his team qualify for the playoffs the previous season with 36 Championship appearances.

Additionally, Hackney has made 16 league appearances this season, and Michael Carrick’s team is still only a few points behind of the top six.

But the prodigy from Redcar has truly come into his own on the big stage at the Carabao Cup.

Midweek, Boro defeated Chelsea in the semi-final first leg at the Riverside Stadium thanks to a goal by Hackney that was the lone goal of the match.

Jones is correct when he suggests that this is more likely to be a summer move, given how much the Teesside team has to play for this season.
