One of the Springboks’ key players at last year’s Rugby World Cup has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury
The revelation that lock Jean Kleyn won’t be playing for the remainder of the 2023–2024 season has dealt a new blow to Munster and, to some extent, the Springboks.
The World Cup winner’s eye injury sustained while representing Munster against Leinster in the United Rugby Championship has kept him out of action since November.
However, it was anticipated that he will return to the field early in 2019. However, that original schedule has now been revised in light of the fact that he had knee surgery for an unrelated injury.
Kleyn’s eye did not heal as quickly as anticipated, so the Springbok decided to have surgery to address a persistent knee problem. As a result, he will not play again this season.
It is unclear when Kleyn will likely return to full fitness, which could ruin his chances of playing for the Springboks in the mid-year Test matches against Portugal and Ireland.
With RG Snyman (chest/shoulder) also out due to injury, the Kleyn setback leaves Munster and the Springboks shorthanded in the lock stocks.
