‘I want to win’ – Postecoglou on his plans for the FA Cup this season at Spurs
Ahead of his first taste of the FA Cup this weekend, Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has been asked whether he prioritises winning a trophy or finishing in the top four, and as you may expect the Australian insisted he is here to win something.
After a strong start to the season under their new manager, Tottenham is now in fifth place in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Liverpool and just one point behind fourth. This is their first half of the season under new manager Ange Postecoglou.
In one of the most competitive title chases in recent memory, the Spurs remain in the running for first place. However, this weekend’s focus is on knockout football, a league with a long history in Tottenham’s footballing past.
Ange Postecoglou wants to win the FA Cup
The Lilywhites begin their journey in the FA Cup tomorrow, with a home tie against Burnley. Speaking to the press (via Football.London), Ange Postecoglou made it very clear that he is intent on going all the way in the cup.
He said: “I don’t know. I know what I feel about it which is like I said every competition I’ve been in I want to win. So I don’t really rank them or diminish one against the other. To win any trophy you have to earn it. Whether that’s domestic or continental, everything is hard earned.
“I haven’t felt anything from this football team that suggests this isn’t a significant contest. The club has experience in this competition, having won it multiple times. For many Spurs supporters who are still alive, the FA Cup will always hold some of their favorite memories.
Therefore, I don’t perceive it that way—I don’t believe that one thing has an affect on the other. I don’t see why your goals in the league must affect your goals in the cup competition.
We have no justification for not competing in the FA Cup and going all the way while still challenging for the top spot in the Premier League, especially because Spurs have already eliminated themselves from the Carabao Cup and there is no European football.
