Report shares the reason why Tottenham fear they can’t sign ‘exceptional’ Liverpool player now

Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez but fear that a January deal will now be kiboshed due to injuries at Anfield.

In the January transfer window, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou will be trying to bring in another center back to North London.

It’s obvious that Spurs need more competition in the middle of their defense for players like Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

Postecoglou wants to play a high line, though probably never as high as against Chelsea last month, so pace will be essential. Several homegrown players have been linked to the position.

Spurs are reportedly considering Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo, but a deal for Joe Gomez of Liverpool appears to be in ruins.

According to The Daily Mail (26/12, page 64), Tottenham has revived interest in acquiring Gomez, a defender for Liverpool.

Given his speed, Premier League experience, homegrown status, and adaptability, it’s easy to understand why Tottenham was considering acquiring Gomez in January.

Given that the 26-year-old is also from London, Gomez could have been drawn to moving back to the city.

Tottenham, nevertheless, are now worried that Liverpool’s latest defensive setback will put an end to any plans to sign Gomez.

Gomez replaced Kostas Tsimikas after the player sustained a collarbone injury during the weekend’s match against Arsenal.

Gomez played a great left back role, neutralizing Bukayo Saka. On Boxing Day, he started in the same position against Burnley, and Liverpool triumphed 2-0.

With Joel Matip now injured and Andrew Robertson already down, Gomez is now desperately required at Anfield.

Gomez is now Liverpool’s starting left back, primary backup at right back, and backup center back in case of need.

Given the number of injured defenders surrounding him, Liverpool is now unlikely to allow a player with that kind of versatility to leave the team.

Gomez, who was praised as “exceptional” by Jurgen Klopp the previous season, has had difficulty earning starts at Liverpool but is now guaranteed a starting position going forward.

It appears like Tottenham will have to change
