Former Wales captain and two-time Triple Crown winner Brian Price has died at the age of 86.
The Deri-born lock made his Wales debut in 1961 and went on to win two Triple Crowns with his country in 1965 and 1969, the latter year as captain.
Between 1960 and 1969, Price played 252 games for Newport and made 32 appearances for Wales. In 1963, he led the Welsh team to a historic victory against New Zealand.
Price, a second rower, participated in all four games for the British and Irish Lions in their 1966 tour of Australia and New Zealand. After learning of Price’s passing, Newport paid homage to an icon in the club.
“We are extremely saddened to hear that Brian Price, one of the greatest players to have worn the Black & Amber jersey, has passed away,” a statement from the club read.
“A native of Deri near Bargoed, Brian joined Newport in 1960 and made 252 appearances in Black & Amber. His finest hour in the jersey came in 1963 when he captained Newport to the famous victory against the All Blacks before a packed house at Rodney Parade.
“Brian participated in all four tests for the British & Irish Lions on their 1966 tour, in addition to his 32 games for Wales and his leadership of the national side during its Triple Crown victories in 1965 and 1969. Later, in 2013, he was among the first people inducted into our Hall of Fame. We extend our deepest sympathies to Brian’s friends, family, and everyone who had the honor of knowing him.”
After retiring from rugby, Price worked as a PE teacher at Caldicot Comprehensive and pursued a career in journalism.
