 Louis Rees-Zammit’s future at the club remains up in the air

Gloucester Rugby is reportedly targeting England and Bath star winger Joe Cokanasiga as a possible successor to Welsh speedster Louis Rees-Zammit, whose contract expires at the end of the current campaign.

Rees-Zammit, 22, has not yet agreed to a new deal with the Cherry and Whites after rising through the ranks of the Premiership club’s academy to become a football hero. There will be competition for the 32-cap Welsh international’s services coming up next season.

Gloucester, who already have two more international-caliber wingers in England’s Jonny May and Ollie Thorley, are reportedly making plans in case they can’t hold onto Rees-Zammit. They were previously linked to a move for Henry Arundell, a former London Irish star, but this week Arundell committed to a new deal that will keep him at Racing 92 for an additional two seasons.

Cokanasiga, a massive winger from Fiji who is astonishingly still only 26 years old, is rumored to have a contract expiration at Bath at the end of the 2018–19 season after joining The Recreation Ground from London Irish. Bath had also pursued Arundell, and their decision on the future of 14-cap England international Cokanasiga at the club may have been influenced by their inability to sign the explosive back. The 6′ 3in, 17 and a half stone winger is also drawing attention from France as well.

With the present team concentrating more on speed and agility in the backs, Cokanasiga would undoubtedly provide the Cherry and Whites greater bulk and power in their backline.
