Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou called out by club icon as brutal verdict issued
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has been called out by a club icon over his tactical approach.
Former Tottenham player Glenn Hoddle adamantly stated that a young squad would have defeated the north Londoners, admitting he was “worried” by Ange Postecoglou’s tactics during their 4-1 loss. With the score still tied at one, Postecoglou saw his team down to nine men and took up an exceptionally high defensive line.
On November 6, Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were sent off for Spurs in a wild match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. But Postecoglou urged that his squad advance higher up the pitch in quest of the winning goal, rather than frantically scrounging for a point.
However, Nicolas Jackson’s late hat-trick gave Chelsea the victory against their London rivals. Hoddle, a former player and manager for Spurs, thinks a squad composed of kids could have defeated Spurs’ nine men.
Regarding Postecoglou’s early Spurs career, Hoddle said to talkSPORT, “I have a few little suspicions.” Playing the way we were, I was concerned when we were down to nine men. That’s okay if that’s Ange’s desire.
“But I’ve been in football long enough – you cannot put pressure on the ball if you’ve only got nine men on the pitch. Sometimes it’s horses for courses, isn’t it? I’m not trying to be negative.”
“Of course I was hoping Spurs were going to see it through,” Hoddle continued. Even though I had three fantastic years at Chelsea, I’m a Spurs fan and have been since I was eight years old.
But as I sat there, I couldn’t help but believe that any team in the world, even a juvenile squad, could have taken that apart. That is my perspective, however. However, it’s encouraging if Ange is responding with, “No, we’re going ahead.”
He believes that by positioning the defense four on the halfway line, he will be able to exert some pressure and force players to advance. Son had a late opportunity to tie the score at two points.

“It’s not just me; every player on the team has minor injuries and still plays.”
This will come a huge relief for Tottenham fans who have seen their squad dealing with an injury crisis at the moment. Particularly in the absence of creative force James Maddison, a potential injury to Son would have been a major setback.
Their upcoming league fixture against Aston Villa presents a tough challenge and Spurs will be hoping for an injury-free return from Son and their other internationals.
