What Ange Postecoglou told James Maddison that he ‘loved’ to prise him to Tottenham
Ange Postecoglou won over James Maddison with a few telling words.
James Madison was swayed by Ange Postecoglou’s assurance during the summer’s early negotiations. Prior to the 2023–2024 season, Madison was attracting interest from several elite European teams following Leicester City’s Premier League relegation. However, the 26-year-old chose to join Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Since making the move, Maddison has taken off and is now regarded as one of Tottenham’s key players. In his first 10 Premier League games, the former Foxes midfielder has contributed five assists and three goals.

Since joining in the summer, Postecoglou has drastically changed Spurs, and as of matchday 10, the north London team is atop the Premier League standings. Tottenham has been frightening rival defenses with the 58-year-old’s unique style of captivating offensive football.
In the meanwhile, Postecoglou overcame Maddison because of his own personality. Madison stated, “We obviously spoke about how I would fit into the way he plays, my style of play, what position and all that sort of detailed stuff,” at a recent A League of Their Own appearance.
“But he said at the end of it: ‘Well, really good to talk. But James, whether you decide to come or not, you’re
expecting to witness a very different Tottenham squad.
“I really appreciated his assurance when he said that Tottenham will change regardless of whether you stay and be a part of it or move elsewhere. And it kind of just left me with the feeling, “Yeah, I want to go work for this man,” in my head.”
In August, Madison was named the Premier League’s Player of the Month, while in September, Postecoglou was named the manager of the month. After 10 games, Spurs are still unbeaten and are atop the standings, two points ahead of both Arsenal and Manchester City.
