Honestly’: Pep Guardiola says 27-year-old Tottenham target is ‘one of the most generous players’ he’s ever seen
Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City in January, and Pep Guardiola has raved about him now.
The 27-year-old is an elite athlete. He is capable of starting for most major Premier League teams when healthy, but for whatever reason, he just can’t break into the Manchester City squad. But Guardiola still appreciates his mentality a lot.
Pep Guardiola praises Tottenham target Kalvin Phillips
In the January transfer window, Kalvin Phillips is reportedly a target for Tottenham Hotspur.
The midfielder for Manchester City is rumored to be a big favorite of Johan Lange, the new technical director at Spurs and a player who will probably be moving on in 2024.
A few people raised an eyebrow when Phillips transferred from Leeds United to City last year. Many people questioned if he would play enough games at the Etihad, and as of right now, the answer is no.
Since joining Manchester City, the 27-year-old has only played 760 minutes of total football for them across all leagues. He has just made one start so far this season, and it was in the EFL Cup loss to Newcastle United.
Pep Guardiola praised Phillips’ kindness even though he is inclined to letting the midfielder leave.
The Guardian cited him as saying, “I never change. But after that, they must concur with the club, as I stated a few months ago. My views are mine alone. The club has the last word. If he decides to go, go ahead and do it. He remains if the deal is not carried out.
“He’s acting amazingly. One of the most giving players I’ve ever seen, to be honest, because I don’t want to praise people who don’t participate in games. Others are maybe causing issues in the locker room, while in fact the opposite is true.
Phillips would be a great signing for Spurs
Even if Kalvin Phillips hasn’t played much football in the past year, that doesn’t make him a bad player.
The 27-year-old has already demonstrated for Leeds and England that he is capable of producing great performances. He is also very good without the ball.
Ange Postecoglou is creating a fantastic team at Tottenham, and Phillips would be a fantastic addition if Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg goes in January.
But at this point, it’s unclear whether the Englishman would desire to transfer to Spurs.
