Ange Postecoglou insists Tottenham are still a work in progress and can improve despite topping the Premier League table.

Ten-man Spurs secured a 1-0 victory over Luton to make it six wins from eight games as they prepare to go into the October international break.

The north London side went top as a result of their win at Kenilworth Road, although that could change with Manchester City and Arsenal – placed second and third in the league – facing off on Sunday.

Asked about whether Tottenham can last the pace at the top of the table, Postecoglou told talkSPORT: “We’re top of the table because we’ve played some good football, been consistent and overcome some big challenges.

“We are currently in that position, but we are still building.

“Our goal is to get better, and we’re still working to develop a team and a style of play. We’ll see where it leads us if we can improve on what we’ve done thus far.

Despite having Yves Bissouma sent off late in the first half, Tottenham still managed to win.

Bissouma received his marching orders for a simulation after picking up a booking, which Postecoglou characterised as an error.

“He’s made a mistake, he’s a human being,” Postecoglou added. He has done a great deal for us this year, and today his colleagues made sure that his error didn’t cost us. We’ve seen that in the last week, and I don’t hang people out to dry.

He now has a responsibility to pay that back, and I have no doubt that he will or has already done so.

“It’s unfortunate that it took place, but what matters is how we respond and what we do about it. I thought the players handled it well.”

I think we started awfully well, he commented in reference to the game. We were completely controlling the game and had two or three fantastic goal chances.

“When we received the red card, we knew the game would change, but I think the guys handled it incredibly well.

“In the second half, we occasionally had to defend, as you always do, but we were always a threat coming from the other direction, and the sheer effort, hard work, and character that they showed meant that we deserved the victory.”

“We have demonstrated character before,” he continued. We’ve had to come back from deficits in many games, and those are the times when you show it, and it’s a credit to them.

In addition to the football, which I believe has been good, the group’s ability to come together and exhibit character and resiliency is commendable.
